Steel building cost depends on the dimensions, the location, the structural requirements and the equipment you choose, so there is no single price per m². Every building is designed to measure, and we prepare the quote from a calculation. In this article we explain everything that affects the price and what we need to calculate it for you.
In short
- A prefabricated steel building has no price list: each one is designed to measure and costed individually.
- The price depends on the dimensions, location, structural requirements and equipment: steel, panels, flashings, doors and windows.
- The structural calculation takes the loads at the site into account, so the same building does not cost the same everywhere.
- For unheated storage, a warehouse tent is the cheaper option, from about €110 per m².

Why does a steel building have no price per m²?
Every project is unique, so the structure is adapted to the building's dimensions, location and intended use and to the client's requirements. Structural calculations and design follow the current Eurocodes and take into account the loads and other conditions that affect the safety, stability and durability of the building.
Two buildings of the same size can therefore have very different prices: one is an unheated warehouse clad in trapezoidal sheeting, the other a production space with insulated panels, a mezzanine and a crane runway. Instead of a standard building with standard limitations, you get a solution designed around your needs.
What affects steel building cost?
The final steel building cost depends on the complexity of the project, the dimensions, the location, the structural requirements and the equipment you choose. The biggest factors are:
- dimensions: the width, length and height of the building and the clear span without intermediate columns;
- location: the snow and wind loads that the structural calculation takes into account;
- structural requirements: a mezzanine, an office section, a crane runway, a parapet;
- building envelope: trapezoidal sheeting or insulated sandwich panels for the roof and walls, and the flashings;
- openings: the number and size of doors and windows.
On every building, the steel structure is hot-dip galvanised and made in execution class EXC 2 to SIST EN 1090-1 and 1090-2.
| Choice | What it means for the price |
|---|---|
| Trapezoidal sheeting or panels | Panels insulate and are needed for a heated space; sheeting is enough for an unheated warehouse |
| Mezzanine and offices | Additional structure and floors, for example in Hi-bond decking |
| Crane runway | The structure has to carry the crane loads |
| Doors and windows | Every opening means additional elements and flashings |

More on thisWhat does the price include besides the structure?
Besides designing and building the structure, we also supply the right equipment and the additional solutions that make the building fully functional. We take care of the building permit: if one is needed, we prepare the design documentation and manage the procedure through to the occupancy permit; if not, we put the building up without one. Find out more on the design and engineering page.
Your quote sets out exactly what it includes, item by item.
What do we need to calculate the price?
For a first calculation, we need:
- what the building is for (storage, production, servicing),
- the width, length and height you need,
- the location of the building,
- any special requirements: offices, a mezzanine, a crane runway, the number of doors and windows.
Enter the details in the inquiry form. For examples of buildings we have completed, see the prefabricated steel buildings page.
A cheaper option: a warehouse tent
If you will not heat the space and nobody will work in it permanently, a warehouse tent may be the better fit. A standard warehouse tent costs from about €110 per m², is bolted together and can be fully dismantled and moved.
